Ecological Assessment & Management Plan - Conservancy Parks & Stormwater Management Areas (Deforest, WI)

Client: Village of DeForest

Classified and mapped natural vegetation across 8 village conservancy parks totaling 271 acres; also assessed 32 storm water areas for invasive plant species presence & abundance, wrote ecological assessment & management plan. Subsequently assisted village with budgeting and execution of management recommendations.

Badfish Creek Natural Resource Area Mapping (Oregon, WI)

Client: Dane County Parks

In consultation with the Friends of Badfish Creek Watershed and Dane County Parks personnel, mapped a network of potential conservation lands, based on existing protected lands, hydric soils and streams. Performed rapid ground survey to finalize map. The map was adopted as part of the Dane County Parks & Open Space Plan and will serve as the basis for public acquisition of conservation land in the Badfish Creek Watershed.

Rock River Basin Actually Restorable Wetland Viewer (Jefferson, WI)

Client: Rock River Coalition, Inc.

Obtained Wisconsin DNR grant & created web-based interactive viewer of restorable wetlands and associated landscape and watershed features in the Rock River Basin.

Marsh Woods Ecological Assessment & Management Plan (McFarland, WI)

Client: Village of McFarland

Described & mapped natural communities and management units within 32-acre village conservacy park. Specified management alternatives by unit.

Hydrologic Modeling & Planting Plan for Stormwater Treatment Wetlands (Fitchburg, WI)

Client: Groundswell Conservancy

In consultation with hydrologist, designed shallow marsh wetlands to treat urban storm water runoff before spilling into high quality wetlands. Established project goals, design principles & timeline. Created plant species list and planting plan for created wetland.

Establishment of Volunteer Stream Monitoring Program (DeForest, WI)

Client: Friends of Yahara River, Inc.

In consultation with Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources & Dane County biologists and members of the citizen’s watershed group, selected 12 stream sampling sites on Yahara River and tributaries. Organized public meeting and 4 volunteer training sessions. Installed data loggers at sampling sites. Assisted Friends with data entry and management.

Rapid Forest Assessment & Management Plan (Sister Bay, WI)

Client: Marshall’s Point Association

Performed rapid inventory of 487 acres of forestland, encompassing variety of forest and wetland types. Compiled results into report and gave presentation to MPA membership. Report provided strategic direction to MPA, weighing competing priorities of timber revenue, biodiversity protection, recreational use and aesthetics.

Wildlife Habitat Study for Proposed Quarry (Milton, WI)

Client: Town of Milton

Performed assessment of wildlife habitat conditions within a 110-acre investigation area encompassing forest, grassland, riparian wetlands and deep marsh habitats. Wrote detailed report outlining investigation area potential for wildlife habitat, and potential risks to wildlife populations of proposed gravel quarry.

Streambank & Wetland Restoration, Carpenter Ridgeway Neighborhood Association (Madison, WI).

Client: Carpenter Ridgeway Neighborhood Association & City of Madison Engineering Division

Designed & executed ecological restoration of 1-mile stretch of urban stream and adjoining wet forest. Obtained grant funds and organized planting and seeding events for community volunteers.

Oak Savanna Restoration Timber Harvests (southern & central Wisconsin).

Client: The Nature Conservancy of Wisconsin

Set-up and administered timber harvests on over 400 acres across multiple TNC preserves. Wrote timber harvest specifications in close coordination with TNC ecologists with intention of recreating oak savanna structure to set the stage for future prescribed fire and other oak savanna management activities.
